Exciting Skyline / Luge Experience
The ride up in the Gondola is very peaceful, and the views over the City and the lake are fantastic. There is also a great restaurant that does an excellent, world class buffet meal in the evenings – with views to die for. You can contact Mairi or Ron to arrange bookings.
The Luge is waiting when ou get out of the Gondola at the top pof the hill, and is a must do activity for everyone. Rides are available at various speeds - starting with a liesurely 2 kilometere run with beautiful views.
This is a great way to spend an evening bonding as a Family. A mixture of education and entertainment their cultural show is the best available, and is a great opportunity to experience Maori singing and dancing plus a full blown Haka! This is followed by a Hangi dinner (a Maori feast cooked in the ground on hot rocks for 3 hours) - which caters for all religions and is absolutely delicious.
Forest and Nature Tracks,
This is MTB (Mountain bike) heaven. This famous tourist attraction also offers walks from 30 minutes to 2 hours, and there are picnic tables on the trails; allowing the family to sit and take in the atmosphere. The Whakarewarewa forest is a reserve with lots of tall and impressive Redwood trees, some are now a hundred years old. Ask Mairi & Ron for a walking map.
There are a total of 15 lakes in and around Rotorua. They are great for a drive out to look and see as a family group, with plenty of areas for the kids to get out and run around – or even go for a swim in the
Not to be missed and highly recommended for those with children 5 years and over. There are various grades of river you can raft depending on the age of your children - including one with a 22 foot waterfall. That said, the scenery is fantastic on them all.
If you feel like getting in touch with nature then this is the trip for you! Off Fairy Springs Road and up into the valleys, this is a reasonably priced way to spend the day and brings you into contact with both local and introduced species – including Lions, Kea, Rainbow Trout and the mischievous Kea. Often they have lion cubs available for petting, and the 2.30 lion feeding is something that everyone enjoys.
The Rotorua Museum
This is not the average museum trip you may be expecting. The beautiful Museum building has recently been fully renovated inside and out, with a fantastic Maori Hall that is interesting for young and old.
There is a free guided tour on the hour every hour, after which you can explore the rest of the displays. The old baths are able to be viewed under the building, and there are viewing platforms up on top. There is also a café with reasonably priced food and good coffee. You may also have a walk around the beautiful Rotorua Government gardens which surround the Museum – remembering that the layout was designed by Malfroy in the 1880’s
